It’s been a long time since I’ve considered Spin magazine to be a valuable source of information on music. That being said, I have been enjoying going through these two end of year lists of theirs to see what I missed:
Found a number of things that looked worth checking out and although I haven’t listened to all of them yet, I already found something that probably would have made my best of list on the second list: the album by An Horse is excellent!

They’ve got the Wave Pictures in the “10 Best Album You Might Have Missed,” so they must know something! I’ll have to take a closer look at what I might have missed. It’s kind of annoying that you have to click through forty pages to see each of their choices though. I also do not understand why that Animal Collective album is at the top of so many ’09 lists, including Spin’s. Have you heard it? I like the last song but the rest does zero for me.
If you read the magazine at the library, you don’t have to click through 40 pages!
Nope, not heard the AC album, nor do I plan to…
I ranted on my list about how I disliked the AC album. I guess that since we three are unanimous, it must be true and all those lists that made it #1 or 2 are dead wrong.
I’ve actually never heard them but my sense is they would not appeal to me at all…
I looked to see how many of those 10 You Might Have Missed were on eMusic. I didn’t check the WPs. Of the other nine I found 7: Wye Oak, Telekinesis, Sleepy Sun, Jack PeƱate, Cass McCombs, Manchester Orchestra, and Desolation Wilderness. They had other releases by P.O.S. but I didn’t care much. Nothing by An Horse.
I looked at the reader comments for that list, though, and lots of them complained about how soft the list was–i.e., no hard rockers. You guys might feel the same way, I don’t know.
Actually, wasn’t it just the metal fans that were bitching? They’re always pissing and moaning. They’re the rodney dangerfields of rock…
Hmmm, you just came up with another possible slogan for emu (up there with “bringing you last year’s music today”): “stocking 7 out of 10 albums you’ve never heard of”.
