prince edward county

This week, I was at a cottage my parents were renting. While technically not in Prince Edward County (aka “The County“), it is just across the Glenora Ferry from there.

The ferry itself is actually quite interesting…it’s part of the Ontario highway system and is free to use. During the summer, it travels every 15 minutes during the day. It seems to largely be used by daytrippers from Kingston visiting the beautiful sand beaches at the Sandbanks Provincial Park near Picton. On some afternoons, the lineup for the ferry was backed up past the cottage which is several hundred meters from the ferry dock.

In addition to the usual swimming, relaxing, etc., I especially enjoyed the following:

  • visiting Barley Days Brewery again
  • discovering Picton now has a cigar store (not surprising but still…)
  • picking up some cheese made by the Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Co.
  • visiting the County Cider Company and enjoying lunch on their patio backing on their vineyards and overlooking the water. This really was a highlight. They have an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven and the setting was just breathtaking. The photo on this page of their website gives you a good idea what it looks like.
  • hiking through the sand dunes at the Sandbanks out to the lake
  • visiting the Buddha Dog for lunch (miniature, locally sourced gourmet hot dogs)

I took a bunch of photos…if you look through them, you’ll see many “triplets”. These are the photos which will be used to create HDR images. Once those have been uploaded, I will write a separate post.

While I was there, the moon was quite full and bright as you can see from these various moonrise shots:
