listening

Some things I’m listening to at the moment, a couple new albums and a couple not so new:

Shake Some Action!Shake Some Action!/STThis is an excellent power pop album from earlier this year. Reminds me of the Hoodoo Gurus and Teenage Fanclub. (from emusic)

About What You KnowLittle Man Tate/About What You Know - Another one from earlier this year, these guys sound a lot like Sheffield’s answer to the Libertines. Good album. (from emusic)

English GardenBruce Woolley & The Camera Club/English Garden - Most notable for containing the original version of “Video Killed the Radio Star” (which the Buggles later recorded), this 1980 album is a fine new wave recording. (from pvac blog)

Generation XGeneration X/ST – While it’s very hard to take Billy Idol seriously, Generation X’s debut album from 1978 is phenomenally good. And as mentioned in the Trouser Press entry on the band, the US version of the album I grew up with is better than the currently available (UK) version. I managed to cobble together a version with the US tracks; it is unclear if the US version was ever released on cd…if so, it is nearly impossible to obtain now.

On a related note, I also put together a version of the Cure’s album Boys Don’t Cry, using the original LP tracking which differs from the cd version as detailed in this Wikipedia entry. Again, I grew up with the vinyl version of this album so the cd has never really done it for me.
