Just re-posting a couple reviews from the library website of movies I enjoyed recently:
Humpday — This one’s definitely for adults only, but a hilarious low budget comedy. Operating at a higher level than the Apatow vein of stuff but there are certainly some similarities. My description won’t do it justice so here is what the [...]
Reading Caligula For President prompted me to revisit a past interest of mine: ancient Rome. I had never watched Bob Guccione’s notorious 1979 film Caligula and figured I should finally check it out. At the same time, I was reminded of the excellent 1976 BBC miniseries I, Claudius. I felt this bore re-viewing so ordered [...]
This past week, downloadable video was added to the Overdrive site we share with other local libraries. I remember looking at such an offering from another Ontario library a couple years ago and thinking how awful it was. It seemed to be all laughably outdated industrial and educational fare.
The good news is that now there [...]
This is definitely one of the better Canadian movies I have ever seen. And the reason it succeeds where so many others fail is it is not trying to be an “American Movie”.
Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson) learns he has cancer and reacts to this news by fleeing Toronto, his job as a teacher, his [...]
Maybe I’m just fixating on the wrong word here, but I found something laughable about the “Includes Free Digital Copy” statement on this dvd case. I guess they are trying to emphasize the “copy” part but for some reason, I’m stuck on the “digital” part…I mean what is the dvd itself? Analog?

The movie follows the struggles of a dysfunctional indie rock band from Raleigh, NC called Circus Monkey. Probably the only actor you will recognize is Kevin Corrigan as the [...]
Watched this documentary last week about Frenchman Philippe Petit’s illegal 1974 tightrope walk between the tops of the World Trade Center towers. Truly an amazing feat and the film is breathtaking as well. Highly recommended!
Of course, the oscars are a joke but if there was any justice in the world, Mickey Rourke would win Best Actor for The Wrestler and Melissa Leo would win Best Actress for Frozen River. However, my expectation is that the saccharine, Forest Gump-y Benjamin Button will dominate the awards…

I recently watched the biopic Control about the life of Ian Curtis, the singer for Joy Division. I thought it was very good. It was directed by Anton Corbijn, best known as a music photographer and director of music videos. Apparently, Corbijn mortgaged his house to finance the film.
The film was [...]
This is pretty cool, a colleague who catalogues our movies saw this in the CLEVNET opac. I think they are just experimenting because we could only find one example of it. Do a title search for the movie The List (the opac apparently does not do permalinks and gets excited if your url includes session [...]
