the runaways

I recently watched this biopic about them and really enjoyed it. I’d never really listened to their music although I’m a big Joan Jett fan. “I Love Rock N’ Roll” is one of my favourite songs of all time and “Bad Reputation” is pretty awesome too. The Runaways were kind of like the Sex Pistols [...]

ted leo retiring?

Sort of, maybe, eventually…

best of 2010

Usually, I don’t get around to the first instalment of the year’s best of list until two thirds of the way through the year. However, 2010 has been such a great year for music that I’m just busting! At this point, I think my favourite album of the year is the Titus Andronicus. [...]

more cowbell

MoreCowbell.dj is an awesome web app for adding more cowbell (and Christopher Walken) to songs which are deficient in it. I always thought Paul Cook should have used more cowbell…

downloadable music for libraries

This is an interesting development. Neat to see one of the major labels is willing to offer drm free music via public libraries. How very un-Sonylike. Here’s the page from one of the ten participating libraries. Three songs a week? Hmmmmm. Still this is an improvement over Overdrive’s music offering which of course [...]

pirate radio

Thoroughly enjoyed this English comedy about a 60s pirate radio station operating from a boat off the coast of England. Great soundtrack with the exception of one Cat Stevens song which made me want to stick chopsticks through my eardrums. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the token American DJ onboard and is great as always.

stereotypes/9

John sent me the latest Stereotypes release 9 which as far as I can tell, is not out yet based on checking the usual suspects (itunes, emusic, cdbaby). Clocking in at 22 and a half minutes and seven songs, like many of their records, this falls somewhere between EP and LP territory.

The first thing I [...]

kill everyone involved

My buddy Drew has a new song/video. Check it out, the video is very cool…

westerberg forgets lyrics

This issue of Spin magazine had a number of interesting articles where musicians were interviewed along with other musicians they’d been influenced by. Of course, the one I most wanted to read was the one with Paul Westerberg and Billie Joe from Green Day. (oddly, this was the cover story in the US magazine apparently…for [...]

gaslight anthem/american slang

This is probably one of my most anticipated albums this year. It’s not due out for a couple months (June 15) but the album has already leaked. God bless the internets!

On the first few listens, nothing too surprising to report. The band has not changed its sound or approach much over the course [...]
